Teacher Workshop Schedule

Our mission is to support educators in their quest to provide quality instruction to elementary, middle, and high school mathematics students. Our intent is to provide experiences to deepen mathematical understandings and to supply lessons that could be implemented in K-12 classrooms.

We are currently planning our workshop schedule for the 2017-2018 school year.
If you have topics you would like to see featured in these workshops, please let us know.

Space for each workshop is limited. You are encouraged to register as soon as possible. Priority is given to teachers from partnership schools and districts.
If you have questions about the workshops, or if you have trouble using the registration forms, please contact Ginny Bohme.

Spring 2017 Workshops

Herbst Enrichment Mathematics Seminar (HEMS): You’ve Got to Move It: Transformational Geometry

This session is for teachers in grades 7-12. Teachers in grades 5-6 who wish to stretch their geometric understandings are also welcome.
What does a transformational approach to geometry mean to my classroom? Come explore ideas of congruence, similarity, and symmetry from a transformational perspective through various mediums. We will utilize simple graph paper, patty paper, Geogebra, and Desmos (to name a few) to explore this concept and collaborate with others to create a wealth of resources and ideas to utilize in the classroom.

Presenter:     Jennifer North Morris
Date:             Saturday - April 1, 2017
Time:             8:30 AM- 12:30 PM
Location:       Room 849 in the Gould Simpson Bldg., 1040 E. 4th St.
Earn:             4 hours of professional development credit for re-certification.

Through a generous endowment sponsored by Lee and Arthur Herbst, a $25 stipend will be paid to the mathematics teachers in our partnership districts and schools (listed below) who attend and actively participate in this Herbst Enrichment Mathematics Seminar.

Others may register for $45. Payment is due at the beginning of the session. Checks may be written to The University of Arizona. This is not considered a tax-deductible donation since it is a payment for services rendered.

Conceptual Strategies for Addition and Subtraction

This session is for teachers in grades K-4.
Addition and subtraction are the foundation of elementary mathematics. These operations intentionally and systematically grow from work in kindergarten through grade 3, culminating in fluency with addition and subtraction in grade 4. How do we help students move along the path? What strategies will build the concept clearly and understandably? Come and explore the conceptual path and strategies to move students to deeper understanding of addition and subtraction.

Presenter:    Melissa Hosten
Date:             Saturday - April 1, 2017
Time:             8:30 AM- 12:30 PM
Location:       MTL Room 120, 1129 E. Lowell St.
Earn:             4 hours of professional development credit for re-certification.
